Footwork is one of the most important aspects of weapon-based fighting and martial.  From our experience over the years however, it seems that footwork is often one of the least trained and under-appreciated aspects of weapon-based fighting.   We cannot emphasize enough the importance of having a strong understanding of weapon-based footwork principles and integrating dynamic footwork drills into your training program.

In this video Instructor Stewart teaches Star Pattern Footwork while incorporating Attack #1 from our Stick Fighting Attack System.  The star pattern consists of six angles of footwork that allow you to work various stances, defensive options and ranges of combat.  In addition to the graphic illustrations in the video, I have listed the footwork angles from the Star Number System below. For those unfamiliar with the terms orthodox stance and southpaw stance, they just describe which foot is forward in a particular stance.  Orthodox stance will have the left foot forward with right foot back.  Southpaw stance will have a the right foot forward with the left foot back.

STAR NUMBER SYSTEM
1 — Forward 45° Left Step (Orthodox Stance)
2 — Forward 45° Right Step (Southpaw Stance)
3 — Lateral 90° Left Step (Neutral Stance)
4 — Lateral 90° Right Step (Neutral Stance)
5 — Backward 45° Left Step (Southpaw Stance)
6 — Backward 45° Right Step (Orthodox Stance)
