Pistol Modifications. Are they really needed to be an effective shooter? Honestly, the answer is no.
–
So the next question would be, can modifications make you a better shooter? Well, if you can't shoot a pistol without modifications, then mods on your pistol likely won't make you any better. Pictured here is a Gen 3 G19. We'll describe a few mods on this pistol and why they may be helpful.
–
The grip on Gen 3 G19's normally has finger grooves. Finger grooves only fit a certain % of hands perfectly so removing the finger grooves + undercutting the trigger guard allows you to get the highest grip possible, which in turn allows you to maximize leverage on the grip, which in turns helps with mitigating recoil.
–
Stippling (engraving using numerous small dots or specks) the grip improves coefficient of friction, which in turn allows you better control of the grip, especially if your hand is sweaty/wet/bloody, which in turns helps with mitigating recoil.
–
RDS (red dot sights) are a bonus, but not needed. If you can't shoot with irons, don't get a red dot. The factory sights on a glock would be one of the first things I'd modify, however if you decide to keep them, take a sharpie and blackout the rear sight. Trust me, it will help.
–
An extended slide stop can help and hurt you at the same time. Extended slide stops make it easier to manipulate. I've seen a ton of new students who can't lock their slides to the rear and some who have trouble dropping their slides using the slide stop. The extension can help in those areas. One negative is that an extended slide stop could result your slide staying back with rounds in the magazine. If you can get by without it, probably a good idea.
–
There are many other mods you could do, including flared magwells, slide cuts, fluted barrels, flat-faced triggers, lightened springs and a whole slew of other things.
–
For self-defense EDC guns I would suggest not messing with internals, springs or triggers. I would suggest upgrading sights, stippling and reasonable frame modifications. For fun guns, shit who cares mod it up proper!

So what's up with the weird design? Well, it might seem weird if you've never seen Colonel Blades before and understand its purpose. This high quality and durable fighting blade was designed for the special operations community. Drawing the blade mimics the motion of drawing a pistol. Punching the blade mimics the motion of a straight punch. Simplistic and deadly. A great tool for the toolbox.
–
From the designer... "Designed from the ground up for the special operations community, The Colonel is a fighting blade that works around the shooter, leveraging reps that warfighters have in their current training regimens to deliver an immediate effective fighting platform. By design, the draw from concealment of the blade is the same as a handgun draw from concealment and striking with a Colonel is the same as throwing a punch. This means the user doesn't have to learn anything new. They already have the instinctive tools to be effective with the blade out of the box."
–
Colonel Blades are now sold on BCM (Bravo Company USA) website.

Looking down that firing line and seeing how these folks are holding their weapons, would you believe that they were all new shooters? Well they were. Fingers straight and off triggers in the low ready waiting for the last student to finish up. Proud of this crew right here.

Who's out there carrying extra mags with them? Although I know the chance of ever getting into a gunfight is RARE. It's also even more RARE that you'll need to jam a fresh mag in. HOWEVER, if you can find some low profile options for keeping an extra mag, probably a good policy to sidekick your blaster.
–
For those who haven't seen it before, this is the NeoMag. Very low profile, uses magnets to hold your magazine in place. Slip Into a front or back pocket, very difficult to tell you have an magazine on you.
–
You can find them on Amazon.

–
If you are going to carry one, I'd suggest getting one with a rounded end that you can hook your thumb behind to provide a power assist when striking. Additionally, make sure the clip and body doesn't have sharp features. These will cut up your hand when hitting hard stuff. Probably smart to get two and use one to beat up in training.
–
The one in the photos is made by Practical Tactical and costs about $15 bucks.

Do yourself a favor and try some Invader Coffee. We HIGHLY recommend the Mexican Chocolate blend. Just grabbed a 5 pound bag of whole bean to throw in the Breville.

Invader Coffee is a small batch air roasted coffee company, veteran owned and operated out of Austin, Texas. All of our beans are Fair Trade and sourced from all over the world. Only 1% of the world's coffee is air roasted, making this a very unique process. Due to this roasting method, our coffee is low acidity and very smooth. #veteranowned #invadercoffee

One of the coolest things about getting this blade was the note from Jason. Handwritten thank you note on a torn off section of a stove top stuffing box. Damn straight!

Can we agree, you probably won't be in a stick or sword fight on the street anytime in the foreseeable future? Mainly because you probably won't have a stick or sword on you to fight with.
–
So why would you train with a stick? For starters, the attack lines and defense lines you learn in kali/escrima/FMA is transferable to many other types of impact self-defense weapons: tactical flashlight, tactical pen, kubaton, car keys, etc. Secondly, it's a force multiplier. If you happen to have a stick and know how to use it, you can be a very hard human to deal with.
–
So when would you use a stick for self-defense? Running trails or walking (with or without dogs). I keep a stick in hand while running. It has come in handy a few times. Saved my ass when a Pit Bull came charging during jog around the neighborhood with the pups. A female jogger with a kali stick and tactical flashlight can be a handful to any would be assailant. I also like to keep Kali sticks by each entrance of the house. Caught slippin' without your blaster, still got a force multiplier to pick up and start smacking a bad guy with. Keep a collapsible baton in your whip and all the same attack lines work, just with a little more damage per blow.

The way you grip the gun is essential to minimizing recoil (aka "the kick") and keeping your shots on target. The 2 primary ways to control recoil are leverage and friction.
–
For leverage, grip as high as possible. For friction, touch as much of the grip as possible with BOTH of your hands.
–
Learn these fundamentals in addition to lethal force law, stand your ground and castle doctrine in our Concealed Carry classes.
